I haven't been able to make my antivirus software run since this problem came up.

Yes I believe its a virus.. IMHO, u should do a virus scan and clean up ur computer.. hopefully u should get ur icons back.. or u can do a system restore to an earlier date.. and if nothing happens.. may be you need to install windows again.. though I hope thats not needed.

You probably have a virus or a trojan.. those are nasty. You can always reboot windows xp with original settings that worked before. Look in start -%26gt; all programs -%26gt; accessories -%26gt; system tools -%26gt; system restore. That should help you.
